After Sony launched the PlayStation Vita, emphasizing the thought that handheld console experience is a better alternative than smartphone gaming, it seems that game industries have already called the death of handheld market as mobile gaming rises.
According to PlayStation Lifestyle, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shushei Yoshida is not confident about portable console business either. During a question and answer session in EGX 2015, he was asked whether Sony is considering a PlayStation Vita 2 or not. He said that as much as he loves the Vita, the climate is not healthy for handhelds in line of the dominance of mobile gaming.

Fans were disappointed by Yoshida words, but the fact that smartphone market is tough to compete seems right. Yoshida commented on Michael Pachter's prediction about the ending of the console era stating that similar reports have been cropping up since the advent of the original PlayStation and are proven wrong time and time again. He also commented that Michael's prediction seems to be interesting but he did not care as much as many others in the industry.
Yoshida stated that many people have mobile phones and many games are free on smartphones compared to PlayStation Vita. He admitted that he is a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and really work hard on designing every aspect of the handheld.
PlayStation's 20th year in the industry recalls the games that mark on PlayStation One. Yoshida revealed that Syphon Filter studio Sony Bend is currently making an awesome, cool game. When asked if players would see another WipeOut game, he replied never say, never. Revival of Crash Bandicoot game is still not possible unless developer Activision decides to make another game as it owns the IP.
Sony itself is contributing to the obstacle of handheld gaming. Gamerant reports that the company's smartphone business just recently announced their Sony Xperia Z5 Premium flagship phone handset having a 4K display and 3GB of RAM (almost six times the Vita's 512MB of RAM). This would be another reason for consumers not to buy the company's handheld game console.
