Marine biologists spotted a glowing sea turtle in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean and filmed it. The glowing sea turtle adds up to the discovery of biofluorescence such as corals, jelly fish, sharks, and others. 

Latin Post reported that researchers first thought that the species could be an underwater UFO; however, on after observing it for some time they discovered it was a glowing turtle.

According to a report published in the National Geographic, this glowing turtle is the first bioflurescent reptile ever recorded. The sea turtle emitted bright green and red colors that gave it a neon glow.

"I was taking pictures of corals that we already knew for biofluorescence and then, in the middle, I guess almost 40 minutes into the dive, out of the blue it almost looks like a bright red and green spaceship that came into my camera," said David Gruber, marine biologist from City University of New York.

Druber have been conducting research on biofluorescence in Sharks and coral reefs in the Solomon Islands since July.

Gruber has stated that usually biofluorescing marine animals emit only color, most commonly green or red; however, this sea turtle showed off beautiful strips of two colors.

This discovery raised questions like if the glowing sea turtles are using biofluorescence as method to find or attract each other.

"What is it doing with the turtles? We know that they have really good vision, they go under these long, arduous migration, but how are they using this? Are they using it to find each other, or to attract each other?" Gruber said.

Sea turtles suffer over-exploitation as they are killed for eggs, meat, skin, and shells, and thus they are classified as endangered species. Gruber said it looks difficult to gather more information about the glowing turtles as only a few of its kind were left alive.
