It's the beginning of the holidays for Zhong Qiu Jie, or Spring Festival, in China. And in the midst of the celebrations, nobody has expected that the festivities will come with fatalities. On Wednesday, Sept. 30, workers have just begun going home for the holiday, when more than dozen bombs have gone off, killing about seven people that day.

According to a report from The Globe and Mail, the coordinated explosions started at around 5 pm. The package bombs were placed in 13 public places, which include a government office, hospital, mall, supermarket and prison, among others. The effect of the explosions was damaging, injuring about 50 people. Places and cars have also been destroyed because of the fatal packages.
Authorities have indicated that terrorism is not to be blamed for the explosions. They have said that this was a result of a criminal matter. A 33-year old man who is surnamed Wei is being held as a suspect in the explosions. Residents have recounted the impact of the explosions, which have mostly hit Liucheng.
Liucheng is located about 300 km northeast of the border with Vietnam, in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. "I always thought terrorists or bombs were very far away from me, but this happened right next to me!" a resident who witnessed the explosion said on social media. "Until that moment I didn't understand that danger can be everywhere." Those who happened to be near where the explosions took place were "very frightened" and considered them acts of terror.
BBC puts the total number of bombs at seventeen. The explosion has almost entirely damaged a five-story building. Investigations are still ongoing, and the likelihood of the bombs being put into parcels and then posted is still being looked into by authorities. Lethal attacks such as the explosions are sometimes carried out by people with grievances towards the government, BBC stated.
