Liu, who is 19 years older than Zhang, took their relationship public via Weibo in March last year. The two studied at Columbia University for months and reportedly got to know each other at a dinner party.

Zhang is called "Sister Naicha" because of a Weibo image, where she holds a cup of bubble tea and looks innocent. This image, plus her identity as a Tsinghua undergraduate, made her become a hot topic on Chinese social media sites.
