USA Today stated in its report that the 26-year-old gunman opened fire in a classroom at the said community college in southern Oregon.
John Hanlin, the Douglas County Sheriff, said that the gunman was shot and killed during a gunfire exchange with officers at Umpqua Community College on Thursday. Hanlin did not name the killer saying that he would not give the shooter the credit that he probably sought before the horrific act. Hanlin also said that no one would hear me mentioning the shooter's name.
Chris Mercer, the gunman, was identified by a federal law enforcement source. He was armed with four firearms, which include one rifle. Investigators then interviewed his mother to try and determine why he caused the rampage.
Authorities are still investigating whether Mercer had some connection to the community college and targeted specific victims or merely engaged in random gunfire.
A victim, Hannah Miles, aged 19, said that she was attending her writing class when she heard a loud noise that came from another classroom like it was a ruler hitting a blackboard. There were two more noises that came from the other room. Therefore, her teacher, Amy Fair, opened the door between the classrooms to check if everything was okay.
It was not, so their teacher turned back to the class and hustled them outside immediately. While they ran down the hall to leave the building, the teacher banged other classroom doors and shouted for everyone to leave fast.
It was 10:37 in the morning, local time, that a 911 call came. A professor, Jillane Mitchell, said that the shooting first erupted in a speech and writing class.
Reported to be the fourth case since August, this current mass shooting incident in a college campus prompted the angry President Barack Obama to say that it is the only country in the world that sees mass shootings every few months. He also spoke passionately but with registered frustration that the country has become numb to them and therefore calling on the American people to officially declare that enough is enough.
The U.S. President was troubled when he spoke from the White House, and he vowed that he would continue to push new gun policies that would prevent any incidents like this to happen.
On the latest update, E! Online reported that many celebrities have tweeted their outrage and heartbreak regarding on the mass shooting on Thursday. The said celebrities include Eva Longoria, Josh Groban, Tim Allen, Rose McGowan, Nia Vardalos, Charlie Puth, Minnie Driver, Dane Cook, Alyssa Milano, and many more others.
