(Photo : Limerickpost) E-cigarettes may lead to smoking.
Do 'E- cigarettes' can be relatively harmless substitutes for cigarettes? Or they are like a Trojan horse that leads to chronic smoking or ultimately nicotine addiction?
Electronic cigarettes, also known as (e-cig or e-cigarette) electronic nicotine delivery systems or personal vaporizer, is a powered vaporizer that simulates the feeling of smoking. It delivers aerosolized nicotine and kid-friendly flavored additives, such as piña colada, peppermint, green tea menthol, coffee, chocolate and vanilla, www.v2cigs.com.

E-cig is designed to imitate the look and habit of smoking, the devices are marketed as a relatively gentle alternative to smoking, without carbon monoxide, tar and other destructive ingredients that may affect the respiratory systems. Vaping, the term commonly used for using e-cigarette, emits only a cloud flavor and not such second-hand smoke.
One of the major concerns of some public health experts, according to Medical News Today, has with regards to the rise in use of electronic cigarette is that such could act as a "gateway" to the use of traditional tobacco products.
According to a certain study conducted in the state of California, researchers concluded that students who reportedly used e-cigarettes at the start of the study were more likely to have gone to use any combustible tobacco product than the baseline e-cigarette has never used.
The reason why some students were more likely to use e-cigarettes before any traditional tobacco products is that they believe that e-cigarettes are neither harmful nor addictive.
Researchers stated the following reasons why e-cigarette smoking could serve as a gateway to traditional cigarette smoking:
* E-cigarettes deliver nicotine more slowly than traditional cigarettes, allowing new users to advance to cigarette smoking as they become tolerant of nicotine side effects.
* Unlike other forms of nicotine, such as smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes are designed to imitate the behavioral and sensory act of cigarette smoking, allowing users to become habituated to the act of smoking.
* E-cigarettes are not subject to the same policy as traditional cigarettes, potentially renormalizing the act of smoking after decades of public health efforts to shift public norms around smoking.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is already studying whether to impose regulations on e-cigarettes.
