A fisherman died and 16 were missing after the typhoon hit the coastal city of Zhanjiang, Guangdong. About 117 of the fishermen caught by typhoon were rescued according to local maritime authorities.
After the downpours, the typhoon caused several tornadoes throughout the coastal areas of Guangdong province, according to CCTV America. The strong winds caused the damage of the power grid that resulted to blackouts to nearly two million people in the province.
In Foshan, three more people died when a tornado struck. The said place is near Guangdong's provincial capital. CCTV showed pictures of damaged buildings and cars after the typhoon hit with torrential rain and gales, which lasts until today, in the densely populated Pearl River Delta.
It was forecast that the typhoon would move northwest at about 20 kilometers per hour and would arrive in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region late Sunday.
In Guangdong, there were more than 24,000 workers that were put on standby to deal with any power cuts caused by Typhoon Mujigae, and telecommunications blackouts have slowed the damage assessment reports.
There have been more than 500 tourists that were stranded on Fangji island, and authorities began to evacuate them from the island on Saturday before they were being forced to halt the operation because of the strong winds. Therefore, the remaining tourists were put up for free at local hotels to avoid being harmed by the typhoon.
The typhoon affected more than 1.44 million people by early afternoon today. Moreover, one of the dead persons was killed because of a falling tree in the regional capital, in Nanning.
It is said that the typhoon came as millions of Chinese took holidays to celebrate the National Day on Oct. 1 in which many tourists also head to the subtropical southern coast of the country.
