(Photo : Reuters) A Taiwanese mother delivered a child about 70,000ft above the ground in a Chinese carrier in U.S. airspace.
It will no doubt be an unforgettable experience for UCLA doctor, Dr. Angelica Zen, who delivered a newborn on her trip back to Los Angeles, at 30,000 feet above the ground.
Passengers departed from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 11:50pm on Wednesday on a China Air flight bond to arive in Los Angeles 8:35pm (LA time). Instead of taking the original 19-hour flight route from Bali to Los Angeles, the plane made an emergency landing when a pregnant Taiwanese passenger broke her bag of water six hours after departure.

In order to ensure the safety of the mother and baby, the pilot sought permission from other passengers to reroute to Ted Stevens Anchorage Airport in Alaska - the nearest airport. However, about half an hour before the plane landed, the woman gave birth to the child. After experiencing the baby's priceless and rare incident on board, other passengers gave a round of applause upon hearing the first cry.
According to Monroe News, one of the passengers - Edmund Chen -, who took a video of the event, admitted that he is not fond of taking films of other people "... but this was just a once-in-a-lifetime thing, you know," he said.
It is the first time that the fourth year resident doctor delivered a newborn without assistance. "They initially told me it was just a lady having some abdominal pain, so I thought it was going to be something simple... But when I saw her she was, like, very pregnant," Dr. Zen. This was "definitely outside of my job description," the doctor added.
After arriving in Alaska at around 9:06am (Taipei time), the mother and child were sent to a local hospital, and they were confirmed to be in good health. The plane had to refuel following the event and was delayed for three hours.
When questioned why the pregnant woman was allowed to board the flight, the airline stated that pregnant women at less than 32 weeks are accommodated as normal passengers. However, they are recommended to consult with their physicians if they are fit to travel.
As per China Post, the baby girl's nationality is yet to be determined. The mother reportedly gave birth in US airspace, but she was on a People's Republic of China carrier.
