Edward "Chip" Sarafin, Arizona State's senior offensive lineman, has told a magazine that he is gay, the first time a football player from a Division I team to come out of the closet.
In an interview with the Phoenix-based magazine Compete, Sarafin divulged his sexual orientation, adding that he had already told his teammates last spring.

"It was really personal to me, and benefitted my peace of mind greatly," said Sarafin.
Responding to Sarafin's disclosure, ASU coach Todd Graham said, "We are a brotherhood that is not defined by cultural and personal differences, but rather an individual's commitment to the Sun Devil Way."
He continued to praise Sarafin saying that, "His commitment to service is unmatched and it is clear he is on his way to leading a successful life after his playing career, a goal that I have for every student athlete. Diversity and acceptance are two of the pillars of our program, and he has full support from his teammates and coaching staff."
The article did not delve into the specifics of how Sarafin admitted his sexual orientation to his teammates. Instead, the article focused on Sarafin's goals in the medical field, and his current work with the Pat Tillman foundation.
Sarafin graduated from Arizona State with a degree in biomedical engineering, and he is currently pursuing his master's degree.
He has been involved in research for football-related concussions, and has been active in the Tillman Scholars program and in the community with youth sports.
The article also noted that Sarafin was working on a football helmet designed to better protect the players and withstand hits.
In his fifth year, Sarafin spent most of his collegiate career working on the scout team at Arizona State.
While he has yet to enter a game as an offensive lineman, his burly frame provides depth at the center position and working occasionally on special teams.
The Arizona Sun Devils open their season on Aug. 28, at home facing against Weber State.
