China: Home of the Richest Women in the World

China Female Billionaires

(Photo : REUTERS/Damir Sagolj) A news study has revealed that China is home to a large percentage of the world's billionaires.

China has proven to be the home of female billionaires. Out of the 73 self-made billionaires found by researchers, 49 of them are from the People's Republic. What's more, eight of them made it to the top ten of the world's richest women, according to the Hurun Richest Self-Made Women in the World 2015.

In a statement, Rupert Hoogewerf, the Report Chairman and Chief Researcher of Hurun, said "China is setting the global benchmark for women in business."

At the top of the list is 45-year-old Zhou Qunfei, who has a rags-to-riches story. Earning only about a dollar a day by creating lenses as a factory worker, she is now the owner of Lens Technology, a big company behind the touch screens of powerful clienteles like Apple and Samsung, according to Fortune. Zhou is worth $7.8 billion and holds the 18th place in this year's Fortune's Most Powerful Women's Asia-Pacific.

"It is unbelievable really that Zhou Qunfei, the most successful female entrepreneur in the world, was pretty much an unknown this time last year," Hoogewerf said.

Next in line is 74-year-old Chen Lihua, owner of Fu Wah International, a Shanghai-based real estate company. She has a net worth $7.7 billion. Coming in third place is the co-creator of Longfor Properties, another real estate company, Wa Yajun. She has a net worth of $4.1 billion.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Holmes and Diane Hendricks were the only women from the United States who snatched a spot on the top 10. Holmes, the blood-testing queen of Theranos, is in the fifth place with $3.4 billion, while Hendricks, the chairwoman of ABC Supply, a roofing material company, gets tenth place with $2.7 billion. Hendricks is tied up with Alicia Koplowitz, founder of the investment company Omega Capital, who is the only person in the top 10 from Spain.

Of the 50 Chinese women listed, Hurun revealed that 36 of them were self-made billionaires. The number of extremely wealthy people has increased over the past year in China, Currently, there are a total of 596 billionaires in the country - both males and females.
