Rescue teams have not been able to identify the object. However, investigations have revealed that the accident triggered a power failure on the boat.

Passengers sustained several injuries including broken arms and legs. But luckily no causalities have been reported. The ferry accident has left 14 passengers with serious injuries. At least five people remain hospitalized in critical condition.

According to HKFP, many doctors and nurses were off-duty over the weekend, but they returned to help treat the injured passengers.

Officials have since towed the Horta to a shipyard in Cheung Sha Wan, where it would be inspected. According to the ferry operator Shun Tak Holdings, preliminary investigations have revealed damage to the boat's engine room and the rear wing.

Officials have not determined what object the ferry collided with. It is also unclear if the ferry deviated from its course.

The weekend's accident is the fourth on the busy route between Macau and Hong Kong in two years. The most fatal ferry accident recorded in recent history occurred on Hong Kong's waters in 2012. The accident was the result of a collision between a boat and a commuter ferry. About a 100 people were injured, while 39 lost their lives.
