Pop star Selena Gomez will star in a Netflix adaptation of the 2007 young-adult novel '13 Reasons Why' and will be the executive producer of the said TV series, Variety reported.

Final negotiations with the Internet streaming giant is still ongoing for 13 episodes of the popular book adaptation. No actual date of when it will be aired has been announced yet.

According to Inquisitr, Gomez will not only be starring in the show but will also be the executive-producer of the project with her mom Mandy Teefey, Anonymous Content, and producer Kristel Laiblin. She actually read the novel and appreciated its potential to be more than just a book then suggested this to Anonymous Content for an on-screen adaptation.

Jay Asher's 2007 novel is about a high school boy named Clay, who receives a shoebox containing 13 cassettes. The boy's classmate and crush Hannah Baker recorded the cassettes and recently killed herself. An explanation of the girl's reason for committing suicide and the role of 12 people are revealed in the cassettes. These cassettes were passed from one student to another.

The story has been developed into a feature movie under Universal, but Netflix turned it into a series. This novel has been very successful in giving increased awareness about teenager suicide and bullying prevention. It has been printed in 35 languages and listed for eight years straight on the New York Times bestseller.

Gomez is a teen television star that turned into a popular singer. Her second solo album 'Revival' was released earlier in October and topped at number one on the Billboard Hot 200. She is returning to television once again. Her career started with 'Barney & Friends.' She also starred in Disnet series 'Wizards of Waverly Place.'

She may be taking a small break for her preparation on the new TV show, but Gomez will not stop making music. She recently announced her new tour dates and she is set star in the upcoming movie 'Neighbors 2.'
