The official Plex application for Apple TV was first announced in September and is now available to download for free.

Apple officially announced the Plex App for Apple TV on Monday, Nov. 2. The app is now available in the Apple app store. Apple's new app store is one of the most important updates for the newly launched Apple TV, which offers third-party developers the chance to deliver dedicated apps for the platform.

Mashable reported that this app is a multimedia streaming player/server combo. It is one of the most feature-packed independent platforms out there.

Plex is a multimedia software that built for home multimedia needs. According to iClarified, owners can run a server instance on a home NAS or even a regular computer that holds the user's media files. The application supports almost everything including iPhones, Smart TVs, Android phones, PlayStation, Roku, and Xbox. When users are away from their home network, using a fancy interface they can still reach their music, videos, and photos in their devices. Northern California reported that the Plex app also supports Internet channels, local content playback, and other contents. In addition, the app supports companion cross-platform remote control system which has been built for the iOS and Android versions.

In a blog post Plex explained that they struggled with Apple TV, since it was originally designed to support only Apple's applications. An independent team of developers created a simple version of Plex app after the second generation of Apple's platform was jailbroken in 2010. But the team failed for the reason that it is complicated to install and did not much offer a smooth user experience.

The new Plex app offers a clean, elegant UI for organizing and viewing multimedia collection. It also automatically pulls artworks, reviews, and trailers for your media.

Plex streaming playback will cost $4.99, but the app is free to download in Apple apps store.
