The first earthquake had a magnitude of 5.98 with the depth of 6 miles (9.8 kilometers), as measured by the US Geological Survey. The same area was hit by another one with a magnitude of 5.6. This caused an alarming panic to thousands of residents, destroying infrastructure and threatening the lives of people.
According to the Earthquake Administration in Ganse, there are about 5,600 residential buildings that were severely damaged and 380 collapsed. Some areas experience power outages and cut mobile communications. The area has suffered 371 shocks.
The tremor of the natural calamity was felt in other provinces including Lanzhou and Xian. These are 400 kilometers away from the Gansu province.
One of the factory worker stated that he experienced "violent shaking" so he "ran to the yard of the [factory] plant immediately". He said, "Our factory is only one floor. When I came to the yard, I saw an 18-storey building, the tallest in our county, shaking ferociously, especially the 18th floor."
A doctor in Minxian told the Reuters that, "Many have been injured by collapsed houses. Many villagers have gone to local hospitals along the roads."
The series of earthquakes has caught the attention of Premier Li Keqiang and Chinese President Xi Jinping. They expressed their concern for the victims and made sure that the rescue operations are the top priority. The Gansu military police deployed 120 rescuers and 500 soldiers. They installed 500 emergency tents and 2,000 quilts.
Later today, heavy rainfall is expected to arrive in Gansu. It led to worries of fear that may cause other calamities such as landslides. The Dinxi government blogged, "Showery weather is expected tomorrow, and lighter rain the day after that. The rain may have an adverse effect on rescue efforts - please pay attention and be on guard!"
The earthquake has damaged people and infrastructure amounting 198 million yuan, as stated by the Dinxi government.
