Researchers have unveiled a chemical that can potentially be administered as eye drops to treat the leading cause of blindness among old people; cataracts.

The team of scientists from the UC San Francisco, the University of Michigan and Washington University in St. Louis first discovered a new compound that is soluble enough to form the basis of eye drops for cataracts medications.

In the United States alone, there are more than 20.5 million citizens aged 40 years and above who suffer cataract in either one or both eyes. In its early stages, the condition can be improved through the use of paraphernalia like eyeglasses, magnifying glass, anti-glare glasses or bright lighting. But if these options fail, surgery is usually recommended. Study reveals more than 6 million individuals have undergone surgery.

Cataract is a condition manifested by clouding of the lens which leads to blurred vision and eventually blindness if proper treatment is not sought. Cataract removal involves removal of the affected cloudy lens and replacement with a synthetic one.

Thanks to this new study, the possibility of a cost-effective eye drop for cataracts may be on its way.

According to author Jason Gestwicki, the lens of the eyes is composed of delicate particles called Crystallin. In their clinical experiment with mice, they tested compound 29 on two different mice: one is carrying mutations predisposing them to cataracts, while the other has naturally developed age-related cataracts. Using the slit-lamp test, researchers found that compound 29 showed partial restoration of transparency on both mice. The compound was also tested on human lens tissues and cataract that were removed during surgery.

The team made it clear that the slit-lamp test does not measure visual awareness and clinical trials on humans are a must. According to the Medical News Today, Compound 29 has been given license and is in the formulation process making it ready for human use.
