Victoria's Secret Angels seem to have it all; the high life of travel and rubbing elbows with the biggest stars, bathing in the hype of the annual fashion show and the privilege of wearing one of the most expensive lingerie collection in the world. But what does it really take to be an angel?
Numerous models have already spoken about the surreal struggles of the modeling industry, and this time the Victoria's Secret's name has been dragged into this controversy. British model Jourdan Dunn recently took to twitter to express how she feels about working under the great pressure of being an Angel for Victoria's Secret. The now deleted tweet said, "Feeling so much better about not doing BS . . . sorry I mean VS now that Rihanna isn't doing it also."
The acclaimed model, who would not be walking the catwalk this year for yet unknown reasons, vented her frustrations with the brand in the tweet.
Victoria's Secret models know that aside from their body statistics, words and actions could cost them their spot on the lineup.
The physical appearance of the women on the show matters very much. With the strict requirements of being exactly 5'9" tall, a vital statistics of 34-24-34 and a body fat percentage of not more than 18%, the models need to go through insane workouts and diets to maintain their figure or they would be cut off from the line up.
Victoria's Secret's Senior Marketing Officer Ed Razek said, "You don't get a free pass to this show, you don't get in because you are somebody, you get in because you earned it."
Veteran angels such as Adriana Lima even had to go through nine days of liquid diet to lose her baby weight. Aside from physical appearances, models as brand ambassadors, need to commit a minimum of 50 days in a year to projects, with appearances and unplanned travels all over the world in which you cannot really maintain or take other projects due to the inconsistency of timelines. This issue prompted veteran Angel Australian model Miranda Kerr to quit in 2013.
With numerous controversies surrounding the show - such as forced get together with actors for publicity and budget cuts rumors - the company has lost a number of angels through the years. Victoria's Secret is still yet to comment on these issues,as new and younger models such as Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner are more than grateful to take a spot on the show and walk the catwalk for the most famous lingerie brand.
