Gunnar Hansen, the actor who played psychotic killer Leatherface in the 1973 horror classic "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", passed away due to pancreatic cancer. He was 68.

A native of Iceland, Hansen boasted of around 20 movies to his credit before his death. Aside from being an accomplished actor, ABC News also made mention that Hansen was a documentarian, magazine editor and author.

Hansen was also a naturalist who was able to write and release the 1993 book "Islands at the Edge of Time", which featured his journey from Texas to North Carolina along America's barrier islands.

The actor saw to fruition his book "Chain Saw Confidential" in 2013, wherein he detailed behind-the-scenes information on the film, which included the fact that the inspiration of the movie was "Hansen and Gretel".

However, of all his works, fans will remember him most for his role as the frightening Leatherface in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", which pioneered other cultic characters such as Michael Myers and Jason Voohees.

What made Hansen's portrayal of Leatherface remarkable above all others who followed suite was his ability to create a killer whom audiences also felt bad for. While Leatherface's wanton killings were certainly not to be condoned, Hansen's performance made audiences feel sorry for the killer who didn't want to kill but was forced to.

On the other hand, fans who got to hear Hansen speak in horror cons, spoke of a man who was "funny, witty, and engaging."

He is survived by Betty Tower, his partner of 13 years.
