Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has finally stepped down on his post to give way to Haider al-Abadi, his nominated replacement, ending the political dilemma that threatened the country as it struggles against Islamic State militants, insurgency, BBC reported.
In his Thursday speech, Maliki declared on state television his withdrawal in favor of Haider al-Abadi to ease the political process movement and formation of the new government.

The decision to support al-Abadi has reflected his desire to safeguard the country’s high interests and not to be the cause of any bloodshed, he added.
Maliki's announcement came shortly after Iraq President Fouad Massoum tapped al-Abadi, the deputy speaker of parliament, to form a new government.
A deputy speaker of parliament said al-Maliki’s concession came after intense pressure from other Shiite members and closest allies. His opponents accused the former prime minister of monopolizing power and antagonizing Sunni minority to foreshadow the ongoing militants rebellion in northern Iraq, reports said.
Secretary of State John Kerry said Maliki’s withdrawal will help increas and opens the way for more U.S. military aid as they consider more political, economic, and security options when Iraq starts building their new government.
Maliki’s move to quit is a major step towards Iraq’s unity, U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice said, praising the former prime minister’s decision.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama affirmed his support to the newly appointed prime minister al-Abadi. The new leadership has a difficult task to unite the country and regain its people’s trust but we are confident that the situation is moving in the right direction, Obama added.
A peaceful and democratic political transition, first in Iraq’s modern history, was achieved after Maliki's departure, reports said.
