Specially grown pears have caught the media and market-goers' attention as the actual fruits, which are grown in China, are molded into the shape of babies.

Reports on Thursday show the regular-sized pears with closed eyes, tiny noses and mouths, and elegantly closed hands, which are molded into shape using plastic fruit molds.

While the fruit is still developing, plastic molds in the shape of an infant are put around the budding pear which gradually grows into shape.

Aside from the oddly-shaped fruits, the Chinese creators from Suzhou also sell several designs of the plastic mold that people can use to make their own baby-shaped pears.

Reports state that both the molds and the fruit will be exported all around the world.

Meanwhile, the baby-shaped fruit caught the attention of China's Weibo community after it became available at a supermarket where a netizen took a photo and posted it on the Twitter-like social media platform in March.

Some citizens who shared similar photos described the fruits to be 'creepy' because they appear as if the babies 'would open their eyes any time.'

However, this is not the first time the special pear has been developed.

In September 2009, a Chinese farmer attempted to 'take a leaf' out of a Chinese classic novel titled "Journey to the West" where a fictitious fruit shaped like an infant gives eternal life to whoever eats it.

At the time, farmer Hao Xianzhang used fiberglass and plastic moldings and fixed them around young pear buds for about six months.

Despite doubts that the experiment would fail, Hao proved everyone wrong and sold around 18,000 pears by September 2009 after investing 50 yuan, or $7, per pear.

It took him six years to perfect the art of fruit molding, experimenting with other shapes, and other moldable fruits.

Other pear designs include Buddha shapes. Molding can also be done with 35 more kinds of fruits and vegetables including cucumbers and carrots.
