Researchers conducting a study on the most effective type of insect repellant have made a surprising discovery - that Victoria's Secret perfume Bombshell is a mosquito repellant. At the moment, many people use DEET, which is the most common active ingredient in insect repellents.
Ten different substances and random choice Victoria's Secret Bombshell perfume were tested as a team of scientists sought to know the most effective mosquito repellent. Campout standbys like DEET were included among the substances. It turns out that the perfume is almost as effective as DEET.

At New Mexico State's Molecular Vector Physiology Lab, researcher Stacy Rodriguez included the perfume in the research to dispel a myth about flowery perfume. She said that previous studies have discouraged people from wearing fruity, floral scents because they can attract mosquitoes. With this in mind, the discovery that Victoria's Secret perfumes can repels mosquitoes is interesting to say the least.
Two different species of mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya, and other diseases were placed in a holding chamber at the bottom of a Y-shaped tube. An untreated hand of a researcher was placed at one prong of the Y lid. Another hand coated with one of the repellents was placed at the other prong.
When mosquitoes were released, it was observed that they chose to fly randomly toward the treated and untreated hands. Researchers counted the number of mosquitoes that picked the repellent-coated hands to measure their theory. Measurements over time were also done to determine if a repellent works after several hours.
They found out that repellents which contain more DEET lasted longer and were the most effective. They also found out that people who use natural alternative mosquito skin patches made with vitamin B can attract more mosquitoes than an untreated hand - which is kind of hilarious.
The Victoria's Secret Bombshell perfume is the big surprise. The researchers found out that it is almost as effective as the DEET-laced repellents. It effects lasted longer than 120 minutes and it attracted only 17% of mosquitoes. It is classified as having fruity, floral notes with purple passion fruit, Vanilla orchid, and Shangri-la peony.
The descriptions and details of the experiments have been published in The Journal of Insect Science this week.
