Landslide in Eastern China Leaves 9 Dead, Scores Missing

A devastating landslide has buried twenty homes and claimed at least 9 lives in a village in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. At least 28 people remain missing following the incident, Xinhua News Agency reports.
According The Washington Post, it was announced on Lishiu City's official blog that the landslide hit Lidong village on Friday night at around 10:50 p.m. A large amount of mud and rocks buried nearly twenty residential homes in the vicinity.

A rescue operation, organized by Zhejiang Province Governor Li Qiang, was immediately put into effect in the area with over 2,300 rescuers and rescue vehicles on Saturday.
Xinhua News Agency stated that the rescuers were able to recover 9 bodies and an injured survivor. The rescuers have since transported the survivor to a hospital. In total, about 300 people were also evacuated from the site.
Heavy rains in Lishui have been recorded over the past two days. According to China.org, the local bureau said that it was still raining when the landslide occurred.
