Which is Fastest for Gaming - SteamOS, Ubuntu, or Windows 10? [REVIEW]

(Photo : Reuters) A new free app called Never10 can block Microsoft's attempts to force users to download and install the Windows 10 OS.
For years, PC gamers preferred not to use Linux game support, which is seriously slower than Windows. Due to intensified support of the OS via Valve and SteamOS, things are now changed. From the beginning, Valve claims that it is impossible to improve OpenGL performance than those of the D3D in Windows, and just recently, it has pushed Vulkan, the Mantle-based API to succeed OpenGL.

Two types of tests were made with Windows 10 to compare with OpenGL through a mixture of Nvidia and Intel hardware. Ars Technica utilized its Steam machine to compare its most recent version of SteamOS. Phoronix, on the other hand, compared the performance in Intel's Skylake Core with HD graphics. Unfortunately, the results showed that Ubuntu and SteamOS are left behind by Windows 10 in terms of many modern titles. It clearly shows that games like "Portal," "TF2" and "DOTA 2" have better performances in Windows 10.
This may not necessarily mean Linux gaming is far behind as some of the gaming titles return playable frame rates even at 2560x1600. However, we can say that nothing beats Windows 10 over Linux even if they work in various contradictions. Looking back at these contradictions, if you are out for PC gaming, why not use Windows 10 as it is more superior than Mac or Linux. Especially with older games, Windows make the right choice for gaming.
Furthermore, it may sound impractical to use Valve to close the gap between Windows and Linux gaming. It does not only assume that Valve can control the entire driver stack, and has to do anything within a one or two-year time frame, which are both untrue. With the launch of Vulkan, Linux users can get feature-parity and similar abilities to DX12 gamers on Windows. However, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia will have to provide appropriate driver support to make it work fine.
To conclude, it may sound surprising that Windows 10 have more edge over Linux. It is actually a reality that one can obscure with the enormous progress over time.
