Researchers from Cornell University found that straight men are more likely to eat a lot in front of women to "show off" their masculinity. The study was conducted during lunchtime at an Italian restaurant where 105 clients aged 18-81 took part in an all-you-can-eat pizza and salad buffet.

Out of the 105 customers to eat at the buffet, 60 were men.
The scientists calculated the food intake of customers by marking down how many of them went for the buffet, and then consequently subtracted any food that was left on their plates after they were done. They also made note if the customers were seated with at least one member of the opposite sex.
What scientists found was that men who ate with women ate much more than those who did not. Men who were seated at a table with women consumed 93 percent more pizza and 86 percent more salad.
"The findings suggest that men tend to overeat to show off. Instead of a feat of strength, it's a feat of eating," noted Kevin Kniffin, visiting assistant professor at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management and lead author of the study.
There was no significant difference in the consumption of women who were only seated with women and those who were seated with men.
With the findings, researchers believed that "eating heavily" could possibly be a male's way of "showing off" in front of potential mates. However, much more extensive research with bigger groups is needed in order to actually conclude their theory.
