Dogs are man's best friend. A former millionaire from Changchun, Jilin Province, China, is living by that slogan as he spent all his fortune establishing a dog shelter to save and adopt stray dogs on stockyards and streets.
This heart-touching story began after 29-year-old Wang Yan pet went missing in 2012, "I went looking everywhere, but all to no avail," he recalled. "Finally someone let me go into the slaughterhouse to try my luck there."

In hopes of locating his lost dog, Sina News reported that Wang visited a local slaughterhouse for a week. But instead of finding his pet, he grew compassionate over the bloody, traumatic scenes he saw at the butchery house. With his wealth, Wang bought the slaughterhouse and founded an animal rescue center.
Now on its third year, Wang claims to have saved more than 2000 dogs. "Right now, we only have 215 dogs," he said. "The most we've had at one time is 1,000, many of them have been adopted."
Having spent more than 3 million yuan (USD 470,186) on the dogs already, Wang has gone bankrupt and is now in serious debt. He is reportedly having trouble providing supplies to sustain the shelter and is worried that the winter season is coming.
"I do not accept monetary donations," he explained. "I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help build a home from these 200 dogs."
Wang and his fiancée are set to get married next month, but even their wedding budget has been used on the dogs. He explained that something urgent came up that he needed to buy more food.
The budget is so tight he cannot provide anti-rabies vaccine for all the animals. This poses danger to him especially as he admits that he sometimes gets bitten by the newcomers. Despite the financial constraint he is into right now, Wang hopes to inspire people to stop eating dog meat and to begin properly caring for animals.
