A shocking footage has emerged of an unnamed Mongolian trade union leader setting himself ablaze during a press conference in protest against a proposed coal mine deal with China.

According to mining, the man is reported to be the employee of a state-owned mining company that is licensed to operate a giant coal mine deposit near the Chinese border, Erdenes Tayan Tolgoi.

To bring attention to the plight of Mongolian miners who are set to lose their jobs to Chinese workers because of the deal, he reportedly arranged the conference.

Before his graphic display of solidarity, the union leader told reporters that the government no longer supports their company and families of the workers are starving, that is why he will burn himself for the people of Mongolia and their children.

He set himself on fire after pouring liquid on his suit as the startled press reacted with horror to the unfolding activities. His fellow union members ripped off their jackets as they screamed and started beating the flames from the leader who was in agony, Daily Mail reported. Fortunately, after the terrifying moment, the members succeeded in putting off the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

In the midst of the chaos, some press members snatched their microphones from the stand and others remained there to record the shocking incident.

The man experienced serious burns and was rushed to hospital. He is currently in a critical condition.

Mongolia is considering selling stakes in 10 state-owned companies, including part of the Tavan Tolgoi, in order to boost the support of investors for its flagging economy.

Back in October, leaders of Erdenes TT changed 203 workers from one mine to TTJV Co, which is a Chinese company. That agreement, which left Mongolians without jobs, had allegedly been written in English to confuse miners about its content.
