Boy Expelled from School in China Because He is Autistic

Chinese boy in Henan Province was expelled from school because he is mentally challenged

A boy has reportedly been expelled from a school in Henan province, China after 40 parents opposed his admission on the grounds that he is suffering from autism. Following the incident, Chinese netizens have reacted furiously of the government's inability to cater for the special needs of such children.

In a report by What's On Weibo, Xiaoxuan (an assumed name) is said to have been dropped out from school after 40 parents complained of his "hyperactive" and "weird behavior." They apparently did not want him to be in the same classroom with their children.

Due to birth complications, Xiaoxuan suffers from autism and hyperlink disorder, accordin gto his parents. The 8-year-old boy wak taken through a year-long rehabilitation training in Beijing, and doctors assured his parents that he will be able to go to school.

In hopes that their son can have a normal life just like other kids, they took him to a local primary institution in Puyang. But in October, he was sent home.

The boy's story started discussions on social media and has attracted over 60 million views and 40,000 comments since November 11. The trending topic "hyperactive boy required to leave school" has got many Chinese netizens furiously demanding equal educational rights for everyone.

A Weibo user named Timfrk expressed his thoughts saying "Don't you have kids yourself? Can't you put yourself in someone else's shoes? Everyone should have equals right to learn. What those 40 parents did negatively affects their own children too."

Legally, the Compulsory Education Law of China in article 4 specifically states that both school-aged children and adolescents have equal rights to get an education and it is illegal to deny them this right.

Chinese citizens have different opinions on the issue. Some agree with the school's decision saying that China's educational system puts pressure on students to get good scores during college entrance exam because of "regional discrimination."

Others, however, came to Xiaoxuan's defense explaining no one has the right to deprive him of education and that the school administration should have done something else rather than kick the boy out immediately.

Shenzhen University's special education expert Zhang Xiujuan gave a few suggestions. She said that training for handling children with disabilities should be provided to all teachers, giving extra compensation to teachers for the extra effort rendered and lastly imposing penalties on institutions who refuse to accept children with disabilities.
