There are rumors that Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE may get the Android Marshmallow update soon.

Many Google Play Edition devices are running on Android Lollipop 5.1 operating system. The Google Play Edition version of Samsung Galaxy S4 is the only device that was recently updated with Andorid 5.1 Lollipop.

The device recently started to receive this upgrade with build number LMY47O. Prior to getting the update, Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE was running on Android Lollipop 5.0 with the build number LRX21P.

The motive of the Google Play Edition program was to create a gateway for flagship Android devices under tech giants like HTC and Samsung to get the whole Android experience.

However, the program no longer exists due to lack of customer interest. The Samsung Galaxy S4's Google Play Edition is exactly same as the original design of Samsung Galaxy S4 in terms of specs and configurations. The only difference is the user interface which is the Touch Wiz UI in Samsung Galaxy S4's GPE device.

All the devices falling under the Google Play Edition program were set to get the regular Android upgrade, just like the original devices. Unfortunately, it did not work out at all.

It is evident from the fact that Samsung Galaxy S4 is receiving the Android Lollipop 5.1 upgrade at a time when numerous flagship devices have already received the Android Marshmallow 6.0 upgrade. LG G4 was recently updated with Android Marshmallow, according to news reports by Gotta Be Mobile.

The huge lag in the release of the operating system upgrade is the main reason that the whole Google Play Service smart phone program got cancelled.

The chances of this device receiving the Android M update in the near future is hanging in balance, as many other upgrades are lined up before that. Samsung is yet to comment officially whether it plans to release the Android Marshmallow update for Samsung Galaxy S4 GPE or not, according to Know Your Mobile.
