According to Newsweek, an attacker fired gunshots in a crawling traffic at Alon Shvuts, killing five people including 18-year-old Schwartz, who comes from Boston, Massachusetts.
According to Fox News, the 18-year-old student was about to deliver food to Israeli soldiers when he was shot.
Schwartz was spending a gap year in Israel and studied in a Jewish seminary. He reportedly travelled to the Israel on Masa, a program that brings young Jews from abroad to live in the country.
The chairman of the Jewish Agency Natan Sharansky and the school where Schwartz graduated in high school have expressed sadness over his death.
"Ezra came to Israel not only to study but also to be a part of the vibrant Israeli experience. This makes his death even more tragic," said Sharansky.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu has also sent his sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and condemned the crime saying that the attacks are the same as the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.
"The murderous terror has struck Gush Etzion and Tel Aviv," he said, according to Ynetnews. "My heart is with the families of the murdered and I send my wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded. Whoever condemned the attacks in France needs to condemn the attacks in Israel. It's the same terror. Whoever does not do this is a hypocrite and blind."
This is the latest in a two-month long outburst of violence between Israelis and Palestinians following tensions over a holy site in Jerusalem.
