According to China Daily, "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" went down up to the third place over the past seven days despite being on top spot a week earlier. It earned 52 million yuan.

A newly released domestic romantic movie titled "Les Aventures d'Anthony" came in at number four. Since its hit the screen on Nov. 13, it has pulled in 40 million yuan.

The movie that stepped down from last week's fourth place was adventure film "Everest." It rounded out the top five by gaining 24 million yuan duuring the week.

"Spectre" tops China's box office at a time when another movie titled "lost" by James Bond would have seen Daniel Craig as 007 forced to kill Judi Dench's spymaster M in a shock finale. The movie is written by Peter Morgan, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Frost/Nixon and The Queen, Shanghai Daily reported.

A screenplay titled "Once Upon a Spy" for the proposed film was not accepted by director Sam Mendes and Bond producers prior to the release of Skyfall in 2012.

The script's key elements, however, included M's past coming back to haunt her and the M16 bigwig dying at the end, was retained for the $1.1bn blockbuster.

Regular Bond screenwriter Robert Wade suggested that Morgan's mistake was to swing too close to John le Carrés' style, rather than 007 creator Ian Fleming. Robert was interviewed for the book "Some Kind of Hero", a remarkable outline of the James Bond Films by Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury.
