Scientists have now created a laser that can refrigerate water for the first time ever, that is similar to supervillains who wield weapons that can blast ice and freeze anything in an instant.
Now, scientists from the University of Washington used laser technology to freeze rather than heat up objects, as lasers are often thought as heat emitting tools as opposed to coolants when they were first introduced in the 1960s.

According to lead author of the study, Peter Pausauzkie from the University of Washington, there are already a few people who thought about using lasers to solve problems since using lasers to refrigerate liquids have not been possible before.
In order to develop a laser as a coolant, the scientists used an infrared laser which possesses a more successful rate when it comes to biological applications. The infrared laser targeted a nanocrystal that is placed on top of a water drop. The laser zoomed in on the nanocrystal as the atoms inside the crystal interacted with the laser light by absorbing its photons.
According to co-author of the study, Paden Roder from UW, the most challenging aspect of the study was to devise a method using an instrument that has the ability to determine the temperature of nanocrystal signatures using the same light to trap them.
As the nanocrystal released the photons in the laser light, it then created more energy than the energy it absorbed initially, and when this energy is released, the remaining heat that is contained inside the crystal was forced out, leaving the water droplet perfectly refrigerated.
This new study using laser as a coolant and proving its application via refrigerating water is for scientists to gain a better understanding of how molecules and atoms work and how this refrigerating laser can be later applied, adding that, how other scientists and even businesses can add to this laser application.
This new study about laser technology used as a coolant is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
