A new scientific study suggests that the Earth is surrounded by a "hair" of dark matter. The new study also revealed that this hair is present on all other celestial bodies in the Milky Way galaxy.

Scientists believe that the new discovery will help them seek out direct evidence about the existence of the theoretical space component. Scientists believe that dark matter compose 85 percent of the mass of the entire universe.

Currently, scientists have no direct evidence about the existence of dark matter. On the other hand, there is indirect evidence that points to the presence of this component all over the cosmos. According to the new study, some dark matter trails appear in the form of "hairy" filaments that drape around Earth.

Gary Prezaeu, from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who is the lead author of the study, said in a statement, "If we could pinpoint the location of the root of these hairs, we could potentially send a probe there and get a bonanza of data about dark matter." Prezeau calculated and suggests that these hairs of dark matter form when it passes through Earth.

Pinpointing where these dark matter come from will give scientists the chance to actually study the stuff directly. Scientist are also suggesting that dark matter forms around a planet could retain the signatures of what is inside it, giving scientists a peek of what is in the core of it.

According to Space, Prezeau's research suggests that the origin of a dark matter hair passing through Earth is round 600,000 miles away. That is around twice as far as the moon. However, in the context of space distance, that is incredibly close.

The close distance of the origin of this dark matter hair will allow scientist to send a probe and closely study it, if it indeed exists, according to Earth Sky.
