Electronics and game manufacturer Sony, based in Tokyo, Japan, is releasing multiple applications that only work under water to showcase the water-resistant properties of some of its Xperia smartphones.

The water-resistance of devices would come in handy if the user is constantly exposed to the elements and accidental spills, but the performance underwater is often glitch. Six new underwater apps would be introduced by Sony that were specifically planned for underwater usage of its newer Xperia devices, such as the Xperia Z, Z1 and Z2.

The engineers at Sony  invented a detector, which is used in its waterproof devices, that generates a test tone inaudible to humans and records it through two microphones on the smartphone for processing. The sounds generate spectrograms that lets the device figure out if it is in air or underwater.

While the underwater programs are mostly functionless, the programs were designed to be entertaining and cute. A number of the apps seem to be for kids, especially Goldie, the app that features a virtual goldfish, according to Digital Trends. Once a water-resistant device is dipped into water with Goldie open, a goldfish begins to swim around the screen.

In a video released by Sony, the goldfish was acting as a fish would until the device was pulled out of the water. Goldie would then begin to flop and gasp mimicking the behavior of a real fish out of water.

Another app is Sink Sunk, where the Xperia user pilots a miniature submarine while the phone is underwater by tilting the phone to dodge obstacles. With the Plantimal program, a mutant creature can be grown on the phone by watering the device every day. For individuals who have a hobby of playing in the rain, Rainy-oke could let the users sing in the rain without forgetting the lyrics.
