Gianna Masciantonio, who has a rare brain tumor, was brought near Pope Francis' pope mobile during his visit to Philadelphia in September. According to reports, a sympathetic FBI agent tipped them off about the pope's stopping point on Sept. 26 so they can meet and hopefully get near him - and it did happen.
Gianna's mother Kristen says she has long dreamed of her daughter meeting the pope.
She says weeks after Gianna's birth, the tumor began when her blood cells attacked her brain stem. Doctors were skeptical of Gianna's condition and even thought that the tumor was inoperable.
"They said go home, enjoy the last weeks, maybe months, that you have with her," said Gianna's father Joe Masciantonio, according to Philly.com.
At first, Joe was worried about bringing Gianna to the pope knowing that the large crowd might have an effect on her immune system. However, her doctor encouraged the family to go.
The family made it to the location in 40 minutes and the officers of the Philadelphia Police Department waved the Pope's mobile over where he also saw them.
"He just caught our eye . . . it's like God told him," said Joe.
The Vatican's head of security Domenico Giani brought the child to the Holy Father and Pope Francis kissed Gianna on the forehead - right where the tumor is located.
"It was truly blessed," Joe said. "God really let her know he heard her prayers."
According to Gianna's parents, after numerous chemotherapy and surgery, weeks after the pope kissed Gianna on her head, the girl's brain tumor has "shrunk significantly."
For the family, the pope was like an answered prayer - a messenger.
