Opposition politician Imran Khan led thousands of demonstrators in a big anti-government protest to Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital, aiming to oust incumbent Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, reports said.

Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party, accused Prime Minister Sharif, who won by landslide, of electoral fraud in last year’s election.

Khan declared that the government was unlawful due to failure to investigate fraud allegations in 2013 election.

He demanded to have a new election saying the protest would continue until Prime Minister Sharif step down, reports said.

According to some reports, Tahirul Qadri, an anti-government cleric, also led a separate rally convoy, Green revolution, to the capital.

Some reports indicated that protesters are angry not only on the allegations of fraud, but also on Pakistan’s economic drop, rising militant aggression, and failure to deliver core services.

The biggest challenge so far to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government was the protests, the so-called Freedom March of Khan and Qadri’s green revolution, happening in Islamabad, reports said.

However, the Pakistan government will investigate the allegations of fraud but clarified that PM Sharif would not be removed through a rally, a senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League party announced.

Prime minister's spokesman Pervaiz Rashid disapproved the irresponsible behavior and actions of the oppositions. The protesters are trying to derail democracy, he added.

International observers, responsible for polls monitoring announced that the result in last year’s election was credible. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) should decline their seats in parliament if they believe that the vote was hoax, critics added.

Police authorities said that there are around 60,000 protesters in the capital. The rally is expected to continue until weekend, reports confirmed.
