The broken deal between the Brooklyn Nets and Memphis Grizzlies involving Joe Johnson is rumored to have been reopened as the Grizz searches for a scoring wingman while the Nets attempt to rebuild their team from scratch.

In June, both teams discussed a potential trade with Johnson as the centerpiece but they "couldn't find a workable framework to complete the deal", as reported by SB Nation.

The main reason why the negotiations did not push through was reportedly the 34-year-old shooting guard's monstrous salary, which is about $24.9 million this season alone.

Although Johnson's deal is expiring, the Grizzlies were allegedly unwilling to carry the brunt of such a heavy contract for the long term.

However, with the salary cap set to vastly expand next summer, Memphis officials seemed to be changing their minds about the offer as the team is said to be desperately in need of wing scoring, something that current starting small forward Tony Allen could not provide for the team.

The inadequacy at the small forward spot was magnified during last April's playoffs when the Grizzlies lost to eventual champions Golden State Warriors, 2-4, in the Western Conference semifinals.

The spotlight was on Allen not contributing anything on offense enough for the Warriors to deliberately leave him wide open for jumpers. The tactic paid huge dividends for Golden State as the whole Grizzlies offense was bamboozled as Allen kept on missing what looked like free throw shots.

The same thing is happening again in 16 games so far this season.

With a 9-7 record and sitting at fourth place in the West, Memphis sure has no need to panic. But the Grizzlies are not playing just to enter the playoffs, they are striving to get over the hill and win the championship, which is why getting Johnson is crucial for the franchise.

RantSports suggested that "the two teams could figure something out" if Memphis really wants him and Brooklyn is indeed keen on unloading his contract.

Perhaps some sacrifice in the part of Johnson via a buyout, much like what Deron Williams did to move to the Mavericks, would make the deal finally happen.

That would be a win-win situation for all parties concerned, including Johnson, who could get another chance at winning an NBA title before he retires.
