Negative births experienced by pregnant women near 9/11 attack, researchers said.

Researchers found out that pregnant women that were living near the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attack had experienced negative birth outcome.

They said that these mothers tend to have premature births and deliver babies with low birth weights.

The babies, especially baby boys, were also admitted to neonatal intensive care units after birth, they added

Janet Currie, one of the researchers, said that previous research into the health impacts of in utero exposure to the 9/11 dust cloud on birth outcomes has shown little evidence of consistent effects.

This is a puzzle given that 9/11 was one was one of the worst environmental catastrophes to have ever befallen New York City, she added.

She believes that this study suggest a simple resolution to this possible through researching women who lived near the 9/11 Attack site.

Researchers used the data of pregnant woman in their first trimester in September 11, 2001 on New York and compare the babies with their siblings.

Exposure to the 9/11 attack, more than doubled the mother's chances of delivering a premature baby, they said.

They explained that baby boys that were born nine months after the attack have birth complications and low birth weight.

They were more likely to be admitted to the NICU, they added.

Researchers said that the neighborhood most affected by the 9/11 dust cloud included Lower Manhattan, Battery Park City, Soho, Tribeca, Civic Center, Little Itality, Chinatown and Lower East Side.

They said that the collapse of the World Trade Center created negative air pressure of dust and smoke in the avenues surrounding that attack.

Past studies showed that environmental exposure to the dust cloud created by the attack had adverse effects on the health of community residents and emergency workers.
