Geminoid F is a 5-feet, 6-inch android, can move her eyes, respond to eye-to-eye contact, and recognize body language. She was designed to act and look like a human, complete with rubber skin and a woman's face, but cannot walk and has to be wheeled around.

Geminoid F can smile, move her mouth, and furrow her brows. She can also talk and sing, play recordings, or mouth other people's voices. She is equipped with motorized actuators that are powered by air pressure to allow her to copy human facial expressions.

Hiroshi Ishiguro Laboratory created the robot at Osaka University, and plans to create an even better model in the future. Assistant professor Kohei Ogawa said that their final goal is to create some perfect artificial intelligence system using this robot. In this kind of noisy environment, most voice recognition systems do not work.

Geminoid F has already grabbed the fancy of the film industry, becoming the first android to star in a film. Earlier this year, she co-starred in the Japanese movie 'Sayonara' that tackled the after-effects of a nuclear power plant meltdown.

Film director Koji Fukada said working with Geminoid F, who was cast as Leonora in the film, proved to be even easier than directing people. But he said one has to be mindful not to break the robot as its repairs would cost 10 million yen ($83,000 or £55,000).

In the movie 'Sayonara,' Leonora stays loyal to its owner (Bryerly Long) as the nation evacuates following a nuclear disaster. The movie will be shown in the competition section of the Tokyo International Film Festival.

Geminoid F's current version costs $108,600 (£72,000). Ishiguro is hoping that the technology will be closer to the mainstream.
