University officials told its students, faculty, and non-essential staff to stay away from the main campus on the South Side of Chicago after an unknown individual posted an online threat of gun violence.
University President Robert Zimmer told the campus community that classes and activities have been cancelled through midnight on Monday.
"Based on the FBI's assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday," Zimmer said in an e-mail Sunday.
The FBI reportedly discovered an online threat of gun violence against the University of Chicago. The threat was posted online by a still unknown individual.
The individual allegedly mentioned "the campus quad" on Monday morning at 10 a.m. The FBI said it is in the process of determining the source of the threat. The report did not mention in what online site the threat was posted.
Zimmer cautioned that police and security presence will be increased on Monday around the campus. Among the facilities that will be closed on Monday are the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, University of Chicago Charter School, the University Libraries, and the Quadrangle Club.
In some of the previous campus shootings that resulted to the deaths of innocent students and faculty, authorities discovered that the gunman or gunmen had posted videos and statements online prior to committing the crime.
The online videos and statements could have prevented the campus shootings had they been discovered by authorities on time.
