A new study reveals how the human brain cannot be apparently categorized into male and female which also provides crucial information about sex differences in the entire human brain.

Scientists from Tel Aviv University say that although there are specific regions in the brain that possess sex differences, individual brains are not entirely made up of all "male" traits or all "female" traits. There are some characteristics commonly seen in women's brains, while some are more common in men's brains and some are common in both sexes, reveals this new study. Male and female brain features are suggesting gender assumptions that are quite stereotypical, such as how women can multi task more and how men are capable of earning more money.

In this new study, researchers analyzed more than 1,400 MRI scans, examining the anatomy of the brain as opposed to brain processes in males and females. Researchers analyzed the brains of 112 men and 169 women, aged between 18 to 79, intensively looking at 116 brain regions.

Scientists then focused on brain volume and tissue thickness along different brain parts and analyzed those traits that best showed the biggest sex differences. The results were then categorized into most male, most female and in the middle.

The results of the study revealed that only six percent of the brains that were scanned are ranked consistently as most male or most female. Most people are categorized into the middle one which only means, most people are possessing a combination of both male and female brain characteristics.

According to lead author of the study, psychobiologist Daphna Joel of Tel Aviv University, the notion of a male brain and a female brain is old fashioned. There no two types of brain, she adds.

This new study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
