Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) is being groomed by his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, as the boxer who would fill-in Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s May-September yearly schedule, saying that Alvarez could initially take a "victory lap" title defense in May before fighting mandatory opponent Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in September.

SB Nation's Bad Left Hook noted that retired pound-for-pound king Mayweather had a grip on the two Mexican holiday weekends - Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence - ever since 2013 and have produced record-breaking PPV fights in each one of them, except for his last one against Andre Berto.

The 25-year-old Mexican is said to be keen on redeeming the said dates for his countrymen and Mayweather's retirement and his recent unanimous decision win over Puerto Rican legend Miguel Cotto were the breaks he needed to fulfill his dream.

Canelo reportedly wanted to take the dates this year, but since Mayweather is still active, there was no way he could compete with the blockbuster power of Money's fights.

Meanwhile, Boxing News 24 reported that a Canelo-Pacquiao fight could be possible early next year before Alvarez faces GGG in September.

However, it was not clear if it would happen in the Cinco de Mayo weekend as Canelo and De La Hoya had planned because Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) already announced that his farewell fight would be on April 9, the Philippines' Day of Valor celebration.

Pacquiao also chose to fight in April to better prepare for his Philippine Senate candidacy in May. If his fight with Canelo would take place that month, then the eight-division world champion would not have enough time to campaign in his native land.

Boxing Scene recently indicated that WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman is okay with a fight card featuring a doubleheader of Alvarez and Golovkin fighting separate opponents before their mandated title fight.

A dream card for fans would be a Canelo-Pacquiao and Golovkin-Cotto doubleheader in May next year, although that ultra-event could only happen with the cooperation of all promotional companies involved, namely Top Rank, Golden Boy Promotions, K2 Promotions, and Roc Nation Sports.
