Study Shows Christmas Lights Slows Down Your Internet Wi-Fi Connection

Christmas lights can slow down your internet Wi-Fi connection, according to UK's watchdog called Ofcom, who have released an app that is capable of checking home Broadband speed.

The company's application monitors wireless signals and displays data to show whether the connection is flowing uninterrupted from routers to phones and tablets.

The app was released together with a research suggesting that Wi-Fi in six million offices and homes are not running at full capacity. The application helps people by giving them tips about the proper spot to position their routers to ensure maximum Wi-Fi speed.

Ofcom reported that interference of electronic devices affects Wi-Fi connections. Electronic devices in our homes such as microwaves, baby monitors, or Christmas fairy lights are some of the culprits behind this internet speed problem.

The research regarding home Wi-Fi speeds can be found at Ofcom's 2015 Connected Nations report. The report looks at the state of telecoms and wireless networks in the UK. It notes that there has been progress in the use and availability of telecoms services. The statistics shows last year that only about 21% of UK homes experienced super-fast broadband. But today, the number has increased by 27%, with the internet running at speeds in excess of 30 Megabits per second (Mbps).

Super-fast broadband is now available to more than 83% of UK homes compared to 75% last year in the same period.

According to the research, people with higher speed connections are doing more with their internet. Users with fast internet connections are reportedly taking advantage by subscribing to catch-up TV services, online film rentals, and video calls. The research also revealed that out of 2.4 million UK homes, only 8% enjoy speed of 10Mbps or more. Many of these homes were in rural areas.

"Much of the UK's appetite for data was being driven by households that have the super-fast services" said Ofcom.

Ofcom's app is now available for download on both iOS and Android platform.
