Despite "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" gaining horrible reviews from critics and fans, the movie still managed to top Marvel's second-biggest non-sequel movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" this weekend in the box office.

Fans have been anticipating the new TMNT movie for years, but according to reviews have people leaving theaters with a strong distaste in their mouth.

Rotten Tomatoes, a popular review and news website dedicated to film, ranked TMNT at just 19 percent on their "Tomatometer" with an average rating of 4.3 out of 10.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, "Neither entertaining enough to recommend nor remarkably awful, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may bear the distinction of being the dullest movie ever made about talking bipedal reptiles."

TMNT topped the weekend earning a total of $28.4 million, which translates their gross box office income to $117 million over the course of ten days that it's been released, according to information released by Forbes.

Considering the 1990 TMNT movie made $135 million, it's safe to assume the new 2014 version will surpass that within a week. However, these figures aren't adjusting for inflation.

Guardians of the Galaxy is following close behind with $24. 74 million worth in box office sales made over the weekend translating their total revenue to $222.28 million. The only other Marvel non-sequel movie to put up better numbers was Iron Man.

It's also worth noting "The Expendables 3" has completely failed to meet expectations over their newly released weekend only making $16.2 million.

You would think a movie including top-tier actors Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li and many more would entice movie fans around the globe, however that's not the case here.

The film unfortunately was leaked to the public in DVD quality about a month before the Aug 15 release date, so this could have played a huge part in their box office failures.
