Samsung’s Gear VR Headset Now to Support Web Browsing

(Photo : Getty Images) One million unit of Samsung’s Gear VR have been sold thus far.

Samsung has launched a web browser for its Gear VR headset called 'Samsung Internet for Gear VR', which will let users to browse content on the internet directly from the headset instead of downloading it onto their phones beforehand.

Mashable reported that the Samsung's Gear VR browser supports voice recognition and has a built-in screen keyboard for input. The browser also features a new special mode operation called Gaze Mode, which let the users select the menus by simply looking at it. It also supports 3D-video streaming, 360-degree, and regular HTML5 videos. Popular websites such as Facebook and YouTube now support 360-degree videos viewing which is suitable for the Gear VR headset.

According to Samsung, it is not necessary to tap on the touchpad or to use a controller using this technology. Users also have the ability to import and manage their favorite website bookmarks. The browser has a default bookmark to get started with like Google, Yahoo, YouTube, and Facebook and with a tab for more recommended sites once users start to browse. Google voice search is also supported on this device. Using the "Gaze Mode", if a user looks at a specific item for a second or so, the device will "click" the link automatically.

"As a pioneer in the mobile VR industry, Samsung has continually worked to provide our users with a fully immersive mobile experience in the evolving world of virtual reality. As the demand for 360-degree, immersive video content rapidly rises", says Samsung's vice president Chan-Woo Park.

The Samsung's Gear VR is making a lot of progress since the Innovator's Edition was tested in February.The original price of the device has dropped from $199 to $99. The number of devices to support Gear VR headset has been also expanded to include Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, and Galaxy S6 edge+,.

Samsung's Gear VR Web Browser will be available starting Dec. 2 as a beta version on the Oculus Store.
