Nintendo's new president Tatsumi Kimishima has said that the upcoming Nintendo NX console is not a rehash or new version of the Wii of Wii U.
Venture Beat reports that the 65-year-old, who replaced former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata when he died, had his first major Western interview with TIME.

In the interview, he said that the game company still plans on increasing its gaming population, and have more people tap into the company's IP.
To do this, he explained that they are attempting to enter the mobile scene with the “Nintendo Account” and “My Nintendo,” systems. These two are crucial to his goals for the company's mobile strategy.
Nintendo Account is a means to unify all Nintendo properties across the board, including all that can be found in native devices, smartphones and tablets, as well as PCs.
On the other hand, My Nintendo, a subset for Nintendo Account, will be a rewards program just like the recently retired “Club Nintendo” - but with a much larger scope.
When both of these two work together, Kimishima believes that it will give a lot of people access to their whole IP, something that no other company can offer.
Even with the current low on the Wii U (as compared to the Wii), Nintendo is still focused on making games for the console. Not only that, the game company is also focusing on making new dedicated game platforms, one of which is the upcoming NX console.
Kimishima said that currently, the NX is in development, adding that the company will release more information about it next year.
One thing that Kimishima clarified, however, is that the new NX console will be different and an entirely new experience from the Wii and Wii U.
He explained that as the company plans to generate more appeal towards a new consumer base, they will make the next-generation console different from what players have been used to.
As for why the new console is named that way, the new company president said that he believes there's no real meaning to it.
“I don't know where it came from,” he said.
