Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired back at the grand jury for indicting him, stating the move was politically motivated.
Perry was indicted for the abuse of a government official's capacity and coercion of a public servant. He threatened to cut US$7.5 million from the funding for the state's ethics center housed in the county district attorney's office unless District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg stepped down.

As Perry stated, the jury's indictment was nothing more than the abuse of power and said he cannot and will not allow that to happen. He vowed to fight against those who would break down the state's laws and constitution and will hold those accountable for it once the farce of a prosecution is revealed.
A legal inquiry commenced last summer after an ethics complaint against Perry was filed stating that the latter improperly used a veto in denying funding for the prosecution office. The focus of the complaint was on tax fraud and government corruption.
According to the Texas Constitution, the governor has discretion on when to decide, when to sign, and when to veto a bill. This covers discretion to veto individual line-items in an appropriation bill.
Sen. Ted Cruz mentioned a history between Gov. Perry and the Travis County District Attorney's Office and said the governor's indictment was extremely questionable. Even David Axelrod, Obama's former adviser, called the indictment "sketchy."
Perry is the first ever Texas governor to be indicted since 1917. He is also a potential presidential candidate for the 2016 election.
For the record, Perry is the longest serving governor in state history. He revealed that he plans to complete his term as planned.
