One of nine updates Microsoft released on Aug. 12 for the Windows 7 operating system caused problems that could cripple computers and had users facing the "Blue Screen of Death."

MS14-045 was one of the Microsoft updates offered on "Patch Tuesday." It was intended to address three separate flaws, including one related to the Windows kernel, which is at the core of the operating system and another one on font vulnerability.

Users reported within hours of its launch that MS14-045 had generated a "Stop 0x50" error on some computers, but mostly on PCs running the 64-bit edition of Windows 7.

"Installation went smoothly. After rebooting everything worked fine. But when I shut down my notebook and switched it on a little later it came up with a blue screen with a Stop 0x50 in Win32k.sys. I could not even boot into safe mode as Windows failed to start no matter which mode chose, a user identified as "xformer" wrote on OS developer's support discussion forum.

The comment made by the user started a thread that would b viewed almost 50,000 times and contained nearly 380 replies. The number of views it got shows the extent of the issue as it's huge even for Microsoft's support forum, according to Computer World.

Other users on the discussion thread hinted that different updates released on the same day spawned similar troubles, including the update intended to incorporate the ruble, Russia's currency, into Windows 7.

Some users used their original OS installer to boot and use System Restore to regain control of their crippled machines by returning the computers to a previous saved state.

Microsoft offers additional information on how its users should be working with the malfunctioning updates on its support site.
