The now infamous altered photo of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently making its rounds on several websites as a viral meme.

The photo, which featured the prime minister looking over an obviously edited window of a flooded region in Chennai, was generally ridiculed for being poorly done.

The Press Information Bureau, the Indian government's main media agency, posted the Photoshopped photograph of Modi looking through the round window via Twitter. It was then taken down a few minutes later, but not before a netizen noticed, screen-grabbed, and re-tweeted it.

The irony here is that the Indian prime minister actually made a trip to Tamil Nadu in the southern Indian state Chennai, which was devastated by severe floods that killed more than 280 people in recent weeks. This makes the decision to Photoshop the photo quite unnecessary.

Modi did an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas on December 3rd to observe the extent of the flood's damage. However, the actual photo taken is more distant from the view of the flood compared to the altered one.

Expectedly, the Internet has now taken over the photo and has spawned several spoofs, making fun of the state media blunder. Among the notable spoofs created and distributed on the web, include the prime minister looking over  a cartoon version of the little mermaid, U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, the moon landing and many others poking fun on the photo.

"We just tweet out the images that the photo division in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry sends to us. I'm not sure why they morphed it. They've never done this before," said an official of the media agency.

The PIB also apologized and made a statement that the photo alteration was "due to an error of judgement" and said it "regrets" that it was released.
