The former Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver singer, famed for his powerful vocals that propelled the success of his former bands, had a long, difficult history of substance abuse.

The singer was about to go on stage with his band the Wildabouts when he was found lifeless, his social media page announced.

Police also found cocaine belonging to Wildabouts bassist Tommy Black.

The 47-year old Black was eventually arrested for alleged possession of controlled substance. He is now with the Bloomington Police with pending charges.

Aside from being the front man of Wildabouts, Black's LinkedIn page also reveals that Weiland manages Viper Room in L.A. and has also served the Screen Actors Guild as its web manager.

Weiland's former Stone Temple Pilots bandmates, saddened by his tragic death, wrote a touching open letter to him on Friday.

"We know amidst the good and the bad you struggled, time and time again," they wrote. "It's what made you who you were. Part of that gift was part of your curse."

A message was also posted on Facebook by his former Velvet Revolver bandmate and bassist Duff McKagan's.

"We experienced a good chunk of life with Scott and, even in his darkest times, we all had hope and love for him," they wrote. "His artistry will live on, of that, there is no doubt."

Musicians, including Dave Navarro, Travis Barker and Mike Mills of R.E.M., also went online to pay tributes to Weiland.

Together with brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo and Erik Kretz, Weiland formed the rock band Stone Temple Pilots in San Diego.

While sometimes outshone by Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, the band managed to hold its own in the alternative and rock radio in the 1990s.

The 1992 album Core, featuring radio favorites Creep and Plush was a smash hit, certified eight times platinum and selling more than one million copies in the U.S.
