Movie Actor Robert Loggia Dies at 85

Robert Loggia, the movie actor best remembered for his role as the seedy detective in the 1985 Joe Eszterhas film Jagged Edge, passed away Friday in his Los Angeles Los Angeles, TMZ reported.  Loggia was 85.

The veteran character actor has been suffering from Alzheimer's five years prior to his death, his wife Audrey revealed.

"His poor body gave up," Audrey said. "He loved being an actor and he loved his life."

Memorable for his solid built, rugged face, and rough voice, Loggia started out as a radio and TV anchor in Southern Command Network in the Panama Canal Zone before he got noticed for his portrayal of the real-life American lawman Elfego Baca in Walt Disney TV in 1958.

In 1972, he starred in the short-lived TV series called T.H.E. Cat, and as Frank Carver on the CBS soap opera The Secret Storm

In 1998, he earned an Emmy nomination for best actor in drama for his eponymous role in the TV series Mancuso, F.B.I.

He also garnered an Emmy nod as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in Malcolm in the Middle (2000).

For his forays as a movie actor, he won the Saturn Award for his role in Big (1988) and an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor as the grumpy private detective Sam Ransom in the thriller Jagged Edge.

In a 1990, Loggia was asked how he managed to succeed in portraying varied careers in different genres. He answered:  "I'm a character actor in that I play many different roles, and I'm virtually unrecognizable from one role to another. So I never wear out my welcome."

In 1954, Loggia married Marjorie Sloane, by whom he had three children: Tracey, Kristina, son John. Their marriage eventually ended in divorce and in 1982, and he married Audrey O'Brien.
