Opposition leader Imran Khan urged Pakistanis on Sunday urged Pakistanis to boycott tax payment in protest to the government's corrupt prime minister.

More than 55,000 people occupied two streets in the center of the Pakistani capital on Sunday to participate in the protests spearheaded by Khan and cleric Tahir ul-Qadri. They called on their fellow Pakistanis not to pay their taxes and utility bills to force Prime Minster Nawaz Sharif to resign this week.

On Saturday night, Qadri said they are giving Sharif and other government officials 48 hours to resign and present themselves before the Pakistani law or people.

Khan, who is a former international cricket star, said that they will not go marching but will go for civil disobedience and will not pay taxes or utility bills not until the prime minister steps down.

Out of the total population of Pakistan, less than one percent pay income tax and the last prosecution for tax evasion happened 25 years ago.

Khan urged his supporters to conduct protests in a peaceful manner. However, he warned authorities that he might not be able to control what these people might do.

Prime Minister Sharif won the election by landslide, marking the first democratic transfer of power in a 180-million population. However, after a year, he struggled in overcoming several problems of the nation including the Taliban insurgency and lax ties with Pakistan's allies.

Although Pakistan experienced several coups in the past, few feel that the military indeed wants to oust Sharif.

According to analysts, the unrest is only a result of the opposition taking advantage of the prime minister's vulnerability in terms of weak ties with the army, shaky peace talks with the Taliban and failure to perform his other responsibilities.
